Washington Capitals play in the Eastern Metropolitan.

Washington Capitals overview

The Washington Capitals joined the NHL in 1974 and play in the Metropolitan Division at Capital One Arena in downtown D.C. They won their first Stanley Cup in 2018, beating Vegas in five games, after decades of playoff disappointment. Alex Ovechkin, who passed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's career goals leader in April 2025, is the defining figure in franchise history. For bettors, the Capitals are a national brand with strong public support and intense Metropolitan Division rivalries with Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and the New York teams.

Betting insights

The Capitals' public profile, built over the Ovechkin era, means their games attract strong betting interest, which can shade the price toward Washington. Rivalry games with Pittsburgh often produce intense, physical hockey, and special teams can swing those totals. Metropolitan Division travel is short for Washington, but Western trips cross three time zones. When the Capitals are underdogs, the moneyline usually offers cleaner value than the +1.5 puck line; as favorites, the -1.5 line requires a two-goal margin. Confirm starting goalies, especially on back-to-backs.
