How our NHL picks work

Each pick is the moneyline favorite: the team the sportsbooks we compare price as more likely to win. One goal often decides a hockey game, so even a clear favorite can lose, and the price reflects that. We are building our own team ratings, and once they are live we will post a pick only when our number differs from the market by a set margin.

How to read NHL odds

Moneyline. You bet on the winner, and overtime and the shootout count: if the game is tied after 60 minutes, whoever wins in overtime or the shootout wins the bet. As of Oct 31, 11:55 PM ET, the Carolina Hurricanes are -270 against the Winnipeg Jets: you risk $270 to win $100, and the price implies about a 73% chance. A $100 bet on the Winnipeg Jets at +235 wins $235, about 30%.

Puck line. The puck line is a spread fixed at 1.5 goals. The favorite at -1.5 has to win by two or more; the underdog at +1.5 wins the bet if it wins or loses by one. Because winning by two is harder, the favorite's puck line pays more than its moneyline. As of Oct 31, 11:55 PM ET the Carolina Hurricanes are -270 on the moneyline and +100 at -1.5 (BetOnline), while the Winnipeg Jets +1.5 are -108 (MyBookie).

Total. You bet on the total goals, including overtime. As of Oct 31, 11:55 PM ET, totals on the board are 6 and 6.5. A half-goal total can't push; a whole number can.

3-way line. Some books also offer a 3-way line on regulation time only, where a tie after 60 minutes is its own result. Our picks are on the regular moneyline.

Why the price matters

When both sides of a bet are -110, each implies 52.4%, so together they add up to 104.8%. That extra 4.8% is the sportsbook's built-in margin, also called the vig or juice, and it is why you need to win 52.4% of bets at -110 just to break even.

When a price is close to even, a few cents between books is a real share of what you win. As of Oct 31, 11:55 PM ET, the Edmonton Oilers are +111 at BetOnline and +105 at BetUS: a $100 bet wins $111 at one and $105 at the other. On the Winnipeg Jets +1.5 on the puck line, the price is -108 at MyBookie and -120 at BetOnline. At -108 you break even at 51.9% instead of 54.5%. Make 50 bets in a season to win $100 each, and -108 instead of -120 means risking $5,400 instead of $6,000 for the same wins.

How we track our record

Every pick is published before puck drop, with its publish time, and is never edited. After the game it is graded won, lost or push. Losing picks stay on this page and in the record. The record starts October 8, 2026, and counts every pick published since then.

NHL picks FAQ

Does the moneyline include overtime and the shootout?

Yes. The NHL moneyline is settled on the final result, overtime and shootout included, and our picks are graded the same way.

What is the puck line?

A spread fixed at 1.5 goals. The favorite at -1.5 must win by two or more; the underdog at +1.5 wins the bet if it wins or loses by one goal.

When are NHL picks posted?

Once one of the four sportsbooks we compare posts a moneyline for the game, and always before puck drop.

What happens if a game is postponed?

The pick isn't graded, so it counts as neither a win nor a loss in the record.
