Houston Texans overview

The Houston Texans are the NFL's youngest franchise. Awarded to Houston in 1999 after the Oilers left for Tennessee, the Texans began play in 2002 and became the league's 32nd team, prompting the realignment into eight four-team divisions. Houston competes in the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans, and plays at NRG Stadium, which in 2002 became the first NFL venue with a retractable roof. The McNair family has owned the team since its founding, with Cal McNair succeeding his father, Bob, as chairman.

NRG Stadium's roof is typically closed during the hot and humid early months of the season, which keeps home games in controlled conditions and removes weather from most totals. The stadium switched from natural grass to artificial turf in 2015. AFC South games often feature competitive spreads because the division has rarely produced a dominant team for long, and records within it can be bunched. Houston is a large media market but not traditionally a heavily public team, so its lines are less likely to be shaded by recreational money than those of marquee franchises. Late-season road trips to outdoor stadiums in Tennessee and elsewhere can bring cold weather that contrasts with the home environment.
