Detroit Lions play in the NFC North.

Detroit Lions overview

The Detroit Lions began in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans of Portsmouth, Ohio, and moved to Detroit in 1934, when they took the Lions name and launched the Thanksgiving Day game tradition. They compete in the NFC North with the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings and play at Ford Field, a fixed-roof stadium in downtown Detroit. The Ford family has owned the franchise since 1963. After decades of frustration, the Lions rebuilt into a contender in the early 2020s, winning back-to-back NFC North titles in 2023 and 2024.

Betting insights

Ford Field is a dome with artificial turf, so totals in Detroit are free from weather adjustment and generally reflect pace and matchup. That climate control favors high-tempo offenses. The annual Thanksgiving home game creates a short week for both teams and draws one of the largest audiences of the year. As Detroit improved, it became a more popular side with the betting public, which can affect pricing compared with the years when the Lions were routinely undervalued. Division trips to Chicago and Green Bay late in the year mean outdoor games in cold and wind, a contrast to the controlled home environment. Aggressive fourth-down decision-making in recent seasons can also affect spread outcomes late in games.
