Tampa Bay Rays play in the AL East.
Tampa Bay Rays overview
The Tampa Bay Rays play in the American League East at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, the only ballpark in the majors with a fixed, non-retractable dome. Hurricane Milton tore away much of the Trop's fabric roof in October 2024, forcing the Rays to spend 2025 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa before returning to the repaired dome for 2026. Despite one of the lowest payrolls in baseball for much of their history, the Rays have won AL pennants in 2008 and 2020. They are known for innovation, including the opener strategy, which matters for bettors handicapping starting pitching and first five innings markets.
Betting insights
Tropicana Field's dome removes weather, and the park has generally played neutral to pitcher-friendly. Its catwalks come into play with special ground rules, and the artificial turf rewards speed. The Rays' heavy use of bullpen games and openers means the listed starter may only pitch an inning or two, so first five innings lines can behave differently than usual. Bettors should check who is expected to pitch the bulk innings. Data from the 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field, an outdoor park with Yankee Stadium dimensions in Tampa heat, should be treated separately from Tropicana Field numbers. The Rays are often undervalued in public perception, which can make their prices interesting.
